Tarot card app icons.
Art Deco and sacred geometry.
My objective for this project was to design an icon to represent one card in a tarot deck every day for 30 days, in a style inspired by 1920’s Art Deco and sacred geometry. There are 78 cards in the standard tarot deck, so in order to choose which 30 to design, I drew my personal “card of the day” each morning of those 30 days.
At the end of this project, I gained experience in designing with precision, which is my preferred way of working. Over the course of the month, I learned more about tarot and sacred geometry, and enjoyed to the opportunity for personal introspection that a daily one-card tarot reading provided.
Each morning of this project, I shuffled and drew my personal tarot card for the day, and recorded its name and meaning in my sketchbook. I reflected on the card throughout the day while sketching ideas and doing research in order to relate the meaning to a shape or pattern, and to a color scheme that fits the mood of the card. I spent 1-2 hours digitally creating each icon.
Murmur Creative design agency in Portland, Oregon and their hypothetical client, Labyrinthos Academy. The client creates tarot card learning apps for those who are interested in understanding tarot in the context of introspection, meditation, and personal growth (rather than fortune telling). This app is for the pragmatist.
The typical app user is a learner and explorer of new subjects. She’s an educated 18-35 year-old female who can afford a smart phone, but isn’t yet willing to invest in a physical tarot card deck.
